Lloyds Bank statement to Excel
Lloyds prints Money Out and Money In as two separate columns and restarts every page with Balance brought forward. Left alone you get two amount columns that cannot be summed and a phantom row per page.
Column layout
Current accounts print five columns with dates as dd/mm/yyyy.
| Account type | Date column | Description column | Money out | Money in | Balance |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Classic / Club Lloyds current accounts | Date | Description | Money Out | Money In | Balance |
Why the two columns must be merged
A debit column and a credit column cannot be added together in Excel, and a pivot on two amount columns tells you nothing. One signed amount per row is the difference between a ledger you can reconcile and one you have to fix by hand.
Brought forward on every page
Balance brought forward is a running total, not a transaction. A twelve-page statement has twelve of them; counted as deposits, they inflate the period's income by an order of magnitude.
Questions
Does it work for Lloyds business accounts?
Yes. Business statements use the same five-column layout with longer descriptions, which are folded back into one row.
What about Lloyds credit cards?
Card statements use a single amount column, so nothing needs merging and the export is a straight table.
Can I import the CSV into Xero?
The CSV is date, description, amount, balance in that order — the common import shape for Xero, QuickBooks and most UK bookkeeping tools.
