Barclays statement to Excel
Barclays uses the Money In and Money Out convention with a Balance Brought Forward line at the top of every page. Both need handling before the data is usable, and both are handled here by default.
Column layout
Barclays current account statements print five columns with dates as dd/mm/yyyy.
| Account type | Date column | Description column | Money in | Money out | Balance |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Current accounts | Date | Description | Money In | Money Out | Balance |
What gets cleaned up
Barclays statements have a few print conventions that turn into bad rows if left alone:
- Balance Brought Forward repeats on each page and is removed rather than treated as a deposit.
- Multi-page statements restart the column header mid-run, which must not become a data row.
- The description column occasionally spans two lines on long card merchant names.
Sorting after export
Barclays runs newest first. Once exported, sort ascending by date if you need a chronological ledger — the date is a real date value, not text, so the sort behaves correctly.
Questions
Does it work for Barclaycard statements?
Barclaycard uses a single amount column rather than Money In and Money Out, and converts cleanly. Purchases are negative, payments positive.
Can I import the result into accounting software?
The CSV export has date, description, amount and balance columns in that order, which is the common import shape for QuickBooks, Xero and most UK bookkeeping tools.
What if my statement is a scan?
Barclays PDFs downloaded from online banking have a text layer and convert directly. If yours is a scan or a photo, upload a PNG or JPG screenshot of the transaction page instead.
