Wells Fargo statement to Excel
Wells Fargo writes dates without leading zeros, so 1/5/2025 is narrower than 12/15/2025 and the amount column physically shifts left or right from row to row. Pulling columns by fixed position gives you garbage; rebuilding by row does not.
Column layout
Deposit statements carry four columns, with the balance labelled simply Balance.
| Account type | Date column | Description column | Amount column | Balance column |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Deposit accounts | Date | Description | Amount | Balance |
The two Wells Fargo specific traps
Both come from the statement being designed for print, not for parsing:
- Continued on next page appears at the foot of each page and in the middle of a transaction run — it must not become a row.
- Dates without leading zeros change the width of the date column, so a position-based parser drifts by a few characters and starts reading the amount as part of the description.
Where the balance column helps
Because Wells Fargo prints a running balance on every row, you can verify the export the same way an accountant would: each row's balance should equal the previous balance plus that row's amount. If the sheet reconciles, the extraction is right.
Questions
Does it read the page footers as transactions?
No. Continuation markers, page numbers and the repeated account header are dropped. What is left is one row per transaction.
What about Wells Fargo business accounts?
Business statements use the same four-column layout with more description text. Multi-line descriptions are folded back into a single row.
Is the opening balance carried over?
If the statement prints an opening balance it is recorded separately from the transaction rows rather than added as a line item.
