Bank of America statements

Bank of America statement to Excel

Bank of America puts summary lines — beginning balance, ending balance, totals — in the same column band as the transactions. Left in, they double your deposits total. The converter separates them out.

Column layout

Bank of America deposit statements use a running balance column headed Running Bal., with the date written as MM/DD/YY.

What gets separated from the rows

These lines look like transactions but are not, so they are kept out of the exported sheet:

  • Beginning balance as of a date, and Ending balance as of a date.
  • Totals this period, broken down by deposits and withdrawals.
  • The account summary block on page one.

Wrapped descriptions

BofA truncates long merchant names at the column edge rather than shrinking the font, so the tail of the name appears on the following line. Those tails are folded back into the row above instead of becoming rows with no date and no amount.

Questions

Why does my total come out wrong in Excel?

Usually because a beginning or ending balance line was counted as a transaction. Check that the row count matches the number of transactions on the statement, not the number of text lines.

Does it handle the BofA credit card format?

Yes. Credit card statements list purchase, payment and interest sections. Payments and credits come through as positive amounts, purchases as negative.

Can I combine several months into one sheet?

Convert each statement, then stack the CSV exports in one sheet and sort by date. Statement periods do not overlap, so the date column stays clean.
